Independence Day, Under a Truce Nobody Admits
On October 1, Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, President Tinubu announced an age of prosperity in which farmers could work their land safely. Overnight, suspected fighters of Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden”, had executed villagers gathering firewood in Borno and attacked army posts in Adamawa. All this during a truce that neither Abuja nor Boko Haram admits to.
